Now I know what that pretty bird is we have in the backyard every year. It is a common flicker, though I see nothing common about it. I thought they must be some type of woodpecker. :bag

Re: Birds at my house

Great pictures! You have more colorful birds in the east than we have in the west. I could photograph the Stellar Jay and the Turkey Vulture for you and we have scads of Junkos. :)) We actually have lots of birds but not the brightly colored ones that you have.

Re: Birds at my house

Marcia, the flicker you saw was probably the Common Northern Yellow Shafted Flicker or a red shafted bird. You can see the yellow or salmon red color under the wings and tail when they fly.

We came home last night and a little sparrow was sitting on the back step all puffed up and stunned. He had flown into the door. It was freezing out so Nick picked him up and took him up to the birds room to our 'Rescue' cage. This morning he was hopping around and feeling fine. We will release him tonight.

Becky, I think it is great you have a rescue cage, too! I also have a bird rescue cage and a couple spare crates for rescue cats and dogs.

We bought it for a Thrush we found. He passed on last year so we just set it up for emergencies. We let the little sparrow go this morning. He flew off just fine. :)

My house finch that hit the window just before it recovered enough to fly away. I thought this one was a goner. He lay on his side hyper-ventilating for a long while.

Susa, I think your House Finch is male, if I remember correctly the females are plain gray without any coloring.

Wish we had goldfinches down here. They are so pretty. We have the same woodpeckers, though.

Another beautiful bird. Daisy watched your movie and was looking around the back of the monitor to see if she could find him.

My Common Grackles this morning. I cannot get rid of that window glare. If I open the door I have no bird to photograph.

Re: Birds at my house

I love your Pileated woodpecker, he/she's a big suet food hog, well, all woodpeckers love suet !!

Common Grackles are a nervous wary bird and will fly away from any possible danger.

Cow Birds are laid back and nothing much worries them. I walked within 2 feet of one when I was crossing my yard, he looked up at me then continued with his foraging.

Love your bird pictures, Susa.
