The mouse I regularly use has a USB plug in. All of the mice I have in baggies from new computers has a round hole which I assume goes where my speakers are already plugged in.

First thing is none of those mice in baggies can be used on modern computers because they use the old fashioned green PS/2 mouse plug but if you had a PS/2 to USB adapter you could use them.

Look in your parts box for this adapter or go shop for one if those mice are worth using. This adapter is low price, $2 to $4.
You might have a problem plugging in this adapter to your computer if the USB ports are too close together (not enough physical space).

Second thing is that I don't see any green PS/2 mouse ports in the back of your computer.
How many USB ports do you have?

Edit: You must shut down the computer before removing or plugging in mouse plugs.

I did not know I needed to shut down the computer before removing or plugging in mouse plugs. emoticon

Thank you so much HG. I ordered a new mouse. It won't harm anything to have a spare mouse anyway. I think all of my USB ports are full. I do have an external hub with 4 ports on it if I need it but it is still in the box.

Since I wrote here before I called my son-in-law for advice. He had me go to [sign in to see URL] and start a session with him and then I turned my computer over to him in the session. He checked my settings. He released the IP address and flushed the DNS. Then he uninstalled the driver for the connection and had me restart the computer to re-install it. None of that made any difference.

Next he had me disable the firewall and try it. I only did that a few moments. I am going to go try that again now and see if it does any good.

I also did a virus and malware scan. It turned up a few little things that are cleaned out but that doesn't seemed to have effected anything. I will run a different scan today.

OK, here is what my connection looks like without the firewall. It is no different than it has been.

Well, besides that your laptop is a different computer there is one big difference in what's connected namely that surge protector. I think the tech boys had suspicions when they pulled that plug and plugged it directly into the wall. Just another possibility but first try a good new mouse.

I'm glad that your son-in-law and you did all of those tests which seems to eliminate any problem with the computer itself.

My son-in-law says the mouse won't matter.

Now I am going to put the cord in the laptop and take it off of wireless and see what happens.

I can't go online at all now with it. My son-in-law is coming over.

Now the screen that pops ups says Proxy Server is Refusing Connections.

My SIL says I should not have a Proxy Server.

Re:

Now that I am thinking back through it all I think my finding that malware helped a lot because when I looked that up it says that it hijacks the person's browser which is probably why that check mark was switched to add a proxy. Then when I had deleted the malware, [sign in to see URL], I couldn't get back online because that was my proxy.

I probably also needed that driver so it was a combination of things.

Once I got those things fixed, it was fixed. It is working fast now and the Internet is not dropping out.

With more thought, I now think it's safe to plug/unplug anything into a USB port without shutting down. What I had read before must have been for type PS/2 mouse connections.

Re:

Your up load and down load speeds are pretty much the same for both browsers but Firefox beats Chrome with the ping/echo time, Firefox's 30 ms is faster than Chrome's 36 ms.

Hey, I googled Polk, OH... got hits and a map in the right sidebar, Polk, OH has a population of 336 and it gave some particulars about Polk, OH. Polk is way out in the sticks miles from everything, it's not even near the main highway.

It looks like your ping went north to the suburbs of Cleveland.

Hi Kaunisto, your up/down and ping time speed test is not looking good and way below standard, are you using dial-up?

Cell phone GPRS/EGPRS. Four times as fast as my old 56k.

Though there's something wrong with that ping, it shouldn't be quite that bad.
