Re: Calling Susa

I'm not Susa, but here are my 2¢.

In short, it takes hard work, time, and patience to build a successful board. You need to make sure there is always fresh, interesting content on your board that encourages people to respond, you need to provide an environment that makes people feel comfortable in joining, and when you advertise, you need to give people an incentive to click on your link.

From one of your Directory listings:
quote:

I think my board is unique because you can post (almost) anything that comes to mind on it.

How does this make your board unique? There are thousands of boards online that allow people to do that.

From one of Susa's Directory listings:
quote:

This is a general board, but with a love for pets, family, current events and computers.

We seem to spend most of our time on current events and politics. However, this is not a debate board where we argue with people. First and foremost we want to make friends while we discuss the current events of the day.

"This is a general board" tells people that they can talk about a lot of things here, but she also lists a few specific things that might interest people, and those are some of the things people will find when they get here.

My own board has three different descriptions in the Directory, each geared toward the category in which it's placed.

]Temple of Illusia: discuss problems w/church & state

When you advertise, you need to do more than say, "It's unique because you can talk about anything," because being able to talk about anything doesn't make it unique. Find out what truly makes your board unique, and highlight that. If it's not truly unique, then come up with something that is unique, and follow my advice at the beginning of this post.

Good luck!

Re: Calling Susa

Hi Wipeout Star!

Thank you, Lesa. You gave excellent advice.

When I started this board I just wanted to find out what it was like to create a message board. If I had known that people would actually come I probably would have named it differently, although I am not sure what. I knew absolutely nothing about message boards except that I was posting on two on a different message board system. In fact that was how I chose Runboard. I didn't want any of my friends there to see me. I thought they would laugh that I had started a board.

I sent a few emails to friends and they came and when no one was here I talked to my dog. I was thinking that she was my first member but now looking at the membership list I am wrong. My dog wasn't first. LOL It only took me a couple days to invite people from those other message boards from that other message board system. I made sure that my content did not compete with the other boards. I didn't think that would be ethical.

My first member is still here under a different name. In fact I see that quite a few of my original people still post here. I have had two members die. One death about devestated us here. I didn't know that the other one had died until a few months ago.

I spend at least two hours here every morning looking through news stories to post new things on this board. I hunt specifically for things about animals and then things about aging since a lot of my members are older. Next, I look for current events. The first thing in the morning, I read every post that was posted that is new to me for the day and reply if there is anything for me to reply to. Then I move to the news sources and try to post several articles or things of interest. I encourage everyone to post new things that interest them. I have wonderful moderators and several of my people post regular posts each day, like the Good Morning thread, and trivia, and smiles, and word of the day. I have a lot of intelligent people here and they offer their expertise. I just can't say enough about the people who come here and post.

I guess that is about it. Lesa has told you about advertising at The Runboard Directory. I advertise everywhere I go. I participated in the contests at The Runboard Directory every other year even though I have to say that I find those excruciating.

Good luck Wipeout Star! It has taken me 5 1/2 years to get this far. I just gradually got more busy here. It was not over night or even in a year.
