Depends how you define winter. And where in Finland you are - every 100km to north adds a week of winter.
Here snow comes in November or December and goes away along March and April.

I was just thinking that Finnish definitions of seasons are that summer is the time there's no snow, winter is the time ground is all covered by snow and spring and autumn are the times between when there's some snow and some bare ground.
(That's not really true, especially with long rainy autumn before snow comes.)

Thanks, Kaunisto.

I guess not so different than here in Ohio, at least when the snow starts and stops. However, maybe you have more snow than we do.

This year, we have had a very mild winter with not that much snow.

Same here, I don't think we've ever in my life had so little snow or have it (permanently) come as late, near New Year.

What kind of trees are those?

Trees have never been my strong point... emoticon

There's the couple large Scots pines (probably plenty more in the background), number of birches (apparently "European white birch") recognizable for the white trunks and lots of spruces (Norway spruce).
Beyond that I can only guess, maybe some aspen or alder.

Nice pics!

Is there any reason why the jackdaws are multiplying? Do they find extra food somewhere?

Thanks for sharing!

The jackdaws are a strange thing. Until about 15 years ago I had never seen one in my life. Then one year a flock just appeared here - also making pigeons disappear almost totally, they were much more common before that; now I barely see one every year.
The number of jackdaws has been growing steadily, they seem to be prospering here. It's always a shock at this time of year when they gather to see how many there are (during summer you rarely see a group bigger than dozen).
I recall last year (or maybe one before) I estimated there to be 200-300 birds in the flock, now I'm guessing around 400. It's awesome when they sit on edge of building or something, all Hitchcock emoticon

I don't know why they are doing so well here. They took over from pigeons and I think here's slightly less gulls than before. Even crows may have had to make room.
They are moving up from south. Climate change? emoticon

That is very interesting about the birds. Who knows but something shifted for them to suddenly appear and begin increasing like that...

I have never heard of a jackdaw. I googled it emoticon So it comes from the same family as the crow? Smaller in size?
They have either a purple or blue tint to the black or gray feathers? Such a pretty bird.
I think what we know about animals and birds are changing. There have been strange things going on in our world. We have too many humans destroying the habitats anymore. emoticon Sad emoticon

I don't remember seeing a tint on jackdaw, not the way you can see green and blue on magpies in sunlight. At most it's very faint.

But they are funny little things. Not sure if one would eat from hand, but jackdaws are more brave than crows or magpies. They just step a little away from people and cars. And you can tell how the big/old ones (with slightly clearer grey head) are even less jumpy than young ones.

Apparently there are eastern and western subspecies; I think ours are mixed breed.

Yes, it is a faint tinge, you need sunlight to see it, less than with magpies.

They are smart. I like them. emoticon
