Software updates & security patches

This will be our continuous running update adviser for all members to add their program updates when found. Any update or patch is acceptable.

Avast! AV program update version 8

Avast! AV now has a Software Updater.

Right click the Avast icon, select "Open Avast! user interface"
Click "Security"
Click "Software Updater"
Click "Fix" on any listed programs that need updating.
You can also "Ignore" any Fix if you plan to uninstall it later.

You only have to open Software Updater once because if it was the last screen you closed it will remember but you'll have to click Rescan to get a refreshed update list. I recommend scanning for updates once or twice a month.

If you want it all done automatically click the button "Activate automatic updates".
I prefer to do it manually because any auto updater slows down your computer.

Footnote:
It seems that Avast scans known vulnerable apps and programs checking for outdated Active X, Flash and Java, etc, programs and those having security holes.

Re: Software updates & security patches

Well, that update was a real mistake. Ever since it went live this morning, I cannot access my emails. Thunderbird cannot connect to the several IMAP accounts I have and use for my business.

I feel very annoyed and fairly helpless, because I can't find anything about that on the internet. I have changed ssl settings in Avast!, but that didn't help. Restarting Thunderbird didn't help. I haven't rebooted yet, but other than that, I'm stumped.

Sorry, Firlefanz, this is the first time I've heard about Avast causing any problems.

I did get a pop-up notice that I should turn off my Thunderbird's SSL so Avast can protect it, I ignored that advice and nothing happened.

Maybe you can disable Avast's email protection if it's on.

Edit to add:
Try Support (bold lettering in the top NavBar).
There's a list of different supports on the list.

Re: Software updates & security patches

I found a solution on the internet, after verifying that it was indeed Avast! blocking my email. It was tricky: Avast sets itself up as proxy, and I had to delete all ports it set up for that, and then tell it to ignore local connections.

And voilá: email works again. :clap :clap

Still, it was annoying and scary. Email is very important to my business.

I am glad you figured that out Firle. I would have had no clue since I don't use Thunderbird.

That really is scary.

Re: Software updates & security patches

Well, let's say, I get most of my email now. I still have to disable the mail function of Avast to get those email that come directly through the host of my websites. Sadly, that's still the main business email.

Still hoping of finding a fix. I like Avast and would prefer to keep it.

Of course, it's also possible my host is having trouble with their mail servers (it happens rarely, but it happens), so I might just give it a day or two to see if this resolves on its own.

Re: Chrome "serious" update just released

March 13, 2013

Just a few minutes ago Avast! had an additional pop-up tacked onto it's normal def update this morning. It said that there's a serious update for Chrome and that Avast! has the link for the update, update Chrome now?

I clicked No and I did the Chrome manually through Chrome's About.

Previous Chrome update; [sign in to see URL] m

Present Chrome update; [sign in to see URL].172 m

Re: Software updates & security patches

Avast installed Chrome behind my back and made it the standard browser ... I didn't like that very much, but I shifted back to Firefox with no problems.

And I ended up having to dissuade Avast from checking SSL email connections. Ah, well, it's no better or worse than before, but now I get my emails just as I used to.

Doing that Chrome update manually sounded like a good idea.

I'm a little angry with Mozilla Firefox at the moment, Firefox asked me if I would like all my bookmarks alphabeticalized, I said yes. What a mess! I now have my bookmark folders mixed with url titles scrambled together in my Bookmarks Bar! I haven't yet found a way to undo it. :grouchy

Man, I got confused with the new Program version 8 followed by another Program update a couple days later, somehow I skipped checking my WinXP machines. I finally have all computers totally updated now. :))

I might have to do that, I run Win XP Pro in a Virtual Box on my Win 7 machine, so I can use some of my old programs and most of all, my old scanner.

Thanks for the heads up! :))

Re: Java 7 update 21 released today 4/16/13

Java seems always to be a high security risk, they are constantly patching security holes.

Java 7 u21

Go to [sign in to see URL] and download this latest version.

I think the download will overwrite what you have installed but it's best to check your Control Panel > Add or Remove (Program Preferences) > Java u14, u15, u17 or u20, for past older versions, they pose a very high risk even if you have the latest installed.

If you are nervous about running Java you can disable Java in your web browser: ]How to disable Java
