Re:

Hi Sue, you said: "...then checked for updates again and the same three updates came up!"
Now you might have 3 copies of that same KB patch. Explanation below.
It's good that you hid them. My Win-7 updates just came today and downloaded/installed without a hitch.

To hide a Windows update in Win-XP (in the website); remove it's checkmark then scroll up and click "Review and Install", you'll get the list again but the unchecked update will offer "Do not show this one again", mark the Do not show to hide it. This might be a little different when connected to Windows Update Center from your desktop.
Edit: Click the dash ( - ) at the left end of the KB description.

Yes, big problem updating Win-XP this time. In my XP laptop I got the gold shield with the reminder bubble, when I clicked 'download' I got absolutely nothing, no update list, no dialog box, nothing! I opened browser IE at Tools > Windows Update and was connected with the Windows d/l center, after their scan they said "No High Priority" updates are needed so I took 2 option downloads and that was that.

I have an unresolved issue in my dino XP desktop, Microsoft requires me to use IE-5 or better, I'm using IE-8, and when I connect with Win d/l center IE freezes up during the scan. When I try Chrome I get a message saying to use IE. I'm not worried because Windows XP won't get any more updates in 7 months anyway.

Tech Newsletter:

quote:

Sept 11, 2013 - 15:05 GMT: Microsoft pulls buggy Outlook 2013 update

The update, labeled "Update for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB2817630) 32-bit Edition" or "Update for Microsoft Office 2013 (KB2817630) 64-bit Edition" , contains bug fixes, and stability and performance improvements. After applying it, many users are reporting on TechNet that the Outlook folder pane is left empty . Many are also reporting that uninstalling the KB2817630 update fixes the problem.

The update is not one of the security updates released today, nor does there seem to be a hint of it in the non-security updates announced for today . But as shown in the screen capture below, the update is offered to users of Outlook 2013.

Quality control has been a problem lately for Microsoft software updates. Three separate updates recently (see Related Articles nearby) have had to be withdrawn and reissued after additional work.

Furthermore, today's Patch Tuesday updates were supposed to include 14 bulletins, according to the Advance Notification issued last week. Only 13 were issued today. I asked Microsoft about the missing update. Microsoft’s Dustin Childs, Group Manager, Microsoft Trustworthy Computing, gave this statement:

We are committed to delivering high-quality security updates for our customers and extensively test each bulletin prior to release. During some additional testing after advance notification, we determined one of the updates was not quite ready. We have not detected any attacks against this issue, or any of the others addressed today, and we'll continue to work on the bulletin and release it once it is ready, through our regular bulletin release process.

Comment about the above:
The only problem remaining is update KB281009 which still reports an unknown problem (code 80242009). I even downloaded it and tried to install that update. The install says it was successful, but it lies because Windows still sees it as required. I ended up having to hide this update. I plan to re-open my Microsoft case tomorrow and report that this office 2013 64bit update fails to install on two computers.

Ah, thank [sign in to see URL] makes me feel better. So do you think I should uninstall the extra copies that I installed of those three updates or just leave them alone? Everything seems fine today so I don't think there is a problem with them being in there, but I figured I'd ask.

Oh and I did figure out this morning how to hide them on the XP PC, so that one is good, but thanks for the info on it. emoticon

You're welcome, Sue. The problem causing duplicate update was KB2817630 which some users found 3 of them in their pc. I'd leave them alone.

Update, my desktop XP prob resolved

Last night I got a Windows shield pop-up, I clicked and downloaded 4 security patches using Windows desktop link, no problem!

I was concerned about the MS Office patch which hid all the folders in Outlook Mail but I use Windows Live Mail so I should be okay.
I hope you aren't using Outlook Mail.

Re: Firefox 24.0 released

I can't begin to summarize all the updates in this report so I'll just post the url for it.

[url][sign in to see URL]

Also this Firefox update came with this required download, it's activated in my FF extensions. I don't see it in my Gmail inbox so I know nothing about how it works.

Suggest running File Hippo update scanner, some updates involve security issues.

Do you think the File Hippo update scanner is as good as the Avast update scanner? Do they cover different things? I just uninstalled my File Hippo update scanner. Perhaps I should have kept it.

I only open Avast updater when I see their pop-up notifier but they may have an updater link in the control center.

In my case I think File Hippo is better because of all the apps I have and FH shows all of the upcoming betas which will become the next updates.

Avast is more concerned about security.

Re: 8 Microsoft patches coming

Coming this Tuesday, October 8

quote:

Microsoft has announced that next Tuesday they will release eight security updates. Windows, Internet Explorer, .NET, Office, SharePoint and Silverlight will all receive updates.

One of the updates, designated Bulletin 1 and destined to be MS13-080, will be a cumulative update to Internet Explorer. This update will address a recently-disclosed unpatched vulnerability in the browser, which is being exploited in the wild.

Four of the updates fix critical vulnerabilities in Windows. .NET and Internet Explorer. Four updates rated Important affect Office, the Office web services, SharePoint and Silverlight.

October marks 10 years since the first Patch Tuesday.

Adobe will also be releasing updates on Tuesday for Reader XI and Acrobat XI for Windows. Both are rated 2, which means it's a critical vulnerability but not known to be in use.

This release sees improvements to the File Finder tool, which now includes an option to find duplicate files based on file content as well as a new upper file size threshold to further narrow your duplicate file search. Maybe I got what was available for my WinXP. My Win-7 laptop sits there not used very much but I like to keep everything up to date just the same.

Re: Google Chrome 38.0.2125.101 - 10/07/2014

This is a week old but I just found it, I had no issues with it.

What's new in this version:

This update includes 159 security fixes, including 113 relatively minor fixes, and improvements, including:
A number of new apps/extension APIs.
Lots of under the hood changes for stability and performance.

Re:

I don't like the look of this new update very well either. They should leave well enough alone when they have it good.
