No, I still think there's a video driver issue. I ran the automatic check for driver updates through Windows and it said my driver was up to date, but apparently that's not always accurate. When I Googled, the advice I found said to go directly to the manufacturer's website. I did go to Dell but I wasn't comfortable proceeding so I'll ask my BIL to help me with that part.

I did notice this morning when I went to run my backup to the external drive that my clock had jumped ahead an hour. I don't know how long that had been the case, I hadn't noticed it before then but I'm assuming it happened when everything else did. I reset it and it's been fine ever since and since it gained time instead of losing it, I'm assuming it's not a battery issue but just related to the driver.

[sign in to see URL] hate computers! I'm so dependent on them but I feel like every time I turn around I'm having another problem. It's just so frustrating.

Well Sue's luck with computers continues... She emailed me from her Mother's computer. Her laptop won't boot [sign in to see URL] does and beeps. Her brother in law is looking at it for her. Why she bought a Dell is beyond me.... I feel bad for her, her first laptop and it has been nothing but trouble.

Hopefully it is a driver issue and not something worse. So for now she is missing in action.

She didn't mention having a desktop pc so does this mean that her laptop is/was her main work machine?

My desktop is a year 2003 Gateway 700s, it's a dino I know, but it's a workhorse and hasn't failed me yet. I do have a Fujitsu laptop and a Samsung laptop for back up also.

Yes, my laptop was my main work computer. My mother has a desktop, though, so I've always got a backup. And now, as Bec said, I'm on a loaner laptop. I did learn from my previous crash, though, and this time I have everything backed up so it's not as major an [sign in to see URL]! Still not fun [sign in to see URL].

Re: 37 critical Java holes to be fixed today

Oracle has published a pre-announcement of the fixes it plans to apply to Java SE in its critical patch update (CPU) due later today. The company says that 40 security fixes have been included and that, of those, 37 can be remotely exploited without the need for a username or password.

The fixes are for all versions of Java that are publicly or contractually supported: Java SE 7 Update 21 and earlier, Java SE 6 Update 45 and earlier and Java SE 5 Update 45 and earlier. There are also fixes for JavaFX [sign in to see URL] and earlier. Oracle recommends that these updates, once published, should be installed as soon as possible because of the risk posed by attacks successfully exploiting these vulnerabilities.

You can go to Control Panel and right click/open Java then click UPdate or use the above link.

This update is Java 7 update 25.

I have no clue why they try to slip in extra things to install. It is annoying. I knew that toolbar was going to be there and I thought it id not harm to mention it in case someone else did not know to look for it and to uncheck mark it.

Re: Opera 15 final has been released July 2, 2013

quote:

(snippets)

By Martin Brinkmann on July 2, 2013

The final release of Opera 15 may come as a surprise to many Opera users as only a month has passed since Opera Software released the first preview build of it to the public. The Norwegian company confirmed earlier on that it would concentrate on the core features in Opera 15 and improve on that in future builds.

This not only included hints about missing features such as user interface customizations but also the missing Linux version which the company confirmed would not be made available in this early version of the browser.

Today Opera 15.0 got released for the Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh operating system. Opera users can download the new version from the official website to install the stable version of the browser on a system. As mentioned earlier, a Linux version is not available at the time of writing.

If you have been using the preview of Opera 15 on your system you are probably wondering what is new. The changes are not many and if you have worked with the preview before you probably won't notice any differences at all, except for the new welcome page that highlights the new features of Opera 15.

story plus a graphic.

I had uninstalled an earlier version of Opera years ago, I simply had no need for it.

Edit to add a couple important snippets.
Opera notes that Opera 12.x users won't be forced to upgrade to Opera 15, mainly because of the missing features in the new version of the web browser. It is also interesting that the company plans to deliver security and stability updates for Opera 12.x for "some time" without going into details for how long.

Note: Opera 15 Stable is available, while Opera Next has not yet been upgraded. If you download the release from the official website, you will end up with Opera 15 Stable and Opera 15 Next installed on your system.

Re: Microsoft's July's Patch Tuesday

Summary: Prepare for a bumpy ride for July's roundup of Patch Tuesday updates, Microsoft warns, with critical flaws for almost every version of Windows running every bit of hardware.

quote:

Microsoft's advanced security bulletin also noted vulnerabilities in Visual Studio, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Lync, .NET Framework, and Silverlight. Internet Explorer 6 and above also requires patching on machines running Windows XP through to Windows RT.

The unusually high number of "critical" monthly updates in July will see Microsoft's figure rise to 22, a faster rate than 2012, which ended the calendar year with 34 critical flaws in total.

(Microsoft missed Google-found flaw in Patch Tuesday updates.)

more here

The download/install of .NET Framework is usually a stinker for me. LOL

Re: Firefox 23 released August 6, 2013

Firefox 23 What’s New

Mixed Content Blocking

This is a new security feature in Firefox 23 that prevents man-in-the-middle attacks and eavesdropping when you are on (secure) https pages. Mixed Content refers to sites that use http and https resources. There are two types of mixed content, active and passive.

Preferences removed

Mozilla has removed several preferences from the browser's options. The removed preferences are:

* Load images automatically.
* Enable JavaScript.
* Always show the tab bar.

These preferences have not only been removed from the options window, their values have also been reset to their defaults. If you run Firefox with JavaScript turned off by default, you will notice that it has been turned on again.

Search provider changes

Up until Firefox 22 Firefox users were able to select different search engines for the browser's address bar and the search bar. You could set the address bar search to use DuckDuckGo and the search bar Google or Bing for instance.

With Firefox 23 comes a unified search experience that removes this option. There is only one search provider in Firefox which will be used by the address bar and the search bar.

Content Security Policy 1.0

Mozilla has added support for CSP 1.0 to Firefox 23. The feature has been designed to prevent many cross-site scripting attacks from being carried out against users. To be effective, webmasters need to set a list of domains that they want JavaScript code to run from. Any other site that loads code, or inline code for that matter, is blocked from being run thus protecting users against code injection and other attack forms.

Improved about:memory interface

The about:memory page has been modified. First, it won't display data on load like it did before. You need to click on one of the buttons, e.g. measure or load, to display the browser's memory allocations.

Mozilla did remove url modifications on the page as well, so that you cannot use any url parameters anymore.

Missing plugin notification interface

When you visit a web page that relies on plugins, you may get a missing plugin indicator in Firefox's address bar. You can click on that for a prompt to install that missing plugin in the browser to access the contents.

This appears to work for popular plugins like Java, Adobe Flash, Quicktime or Shockwave at the time of writing.

Other changes

* The new Mac Os X 10.7 scrollbar style is now supported.
* The Firefox logo has been updated.
* DXVA2 has been enabled on Windows Vista and newer versions of Windows that aims to accelerate [sign in to see URL] video decoding.

details with graphics.

I think you meant the "Tabs bar", the change is the option to remove it is now gone. So the tabs bar will always be there and there's nothing you can do about it assuming you don't do a F11 (full screen) and all of the header is gone (press F11 again to restore). :))
