The probability of having DNA from all of your genealogical ancestors at a particular generation becomes vanishingly small very rapidly; there is a 99.6% chance that you will have DNA from all of your 16 great-great grandparents, only a 54% of sharing DNA with all 32 of your G-G-G grandparents, and a [sign in to see URL]% chance for your 64 G-G-G-G grandparents. You only have to go back 5 generations for genealogical relatives to start dropping off your DNA tree.

So, is it still worthwhile to do that swab thing for DNA to trace your ancestry?

I think so. I have met 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th cousins.

However, the DNA test does not tell as much as I had hoped it would but it has given me some very good leads to ancestors.

Edited to correct spelling.

Did you know that 60% of our genes are identical to those of a mosquito? Life is not as differentiated as we think.

Re: How many ancestors share our DNA

I think it is amazing how much non-human DNA is in our bodies. Scientists used to say human DNA was outnumbered 10 to 1 by bacteria. New research published in Nature magazine in January, 2016 says that assumption was incorrect. It is more like 50-50, with the bacteria having a slight edge.

The "reference man", a 20-30 year old man of average height and weight (70 kilograms of weight and 1.7 meters tall) contains 30 trillion human cells and 39 trillion bacteria. The article points out that these counts are approximate. One person might have half the bacteria and another might have twice as many bacteria.
