My DNA Results

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

From knowing about my 16 great grandparents and farther on my father's line, here are the approximate results of my ethnicities from my paper trail.

English 1/2
German 5/16
Italian 1/8
Swiss 1/16

For example, Ancestry shows my ethnicity as being 32% Ireland. As far as I know, I have no ancestors from Ireland, Wales, or Scotland, but that DNA is also found in England, and I have a great deal of ancestors from England.

My ancestry DNA report shows 22% Scandinavia (Sweden, Norway, and Denmark), and as far as I know, I have no ancestors from Sweden, Norway, or Denmark, but that is also found in Great Britain. The Vikings spread their DNA all over, so my English ancestors are likely showing up partly in the Scandinavian DNA in my results, as well as the Ireland result.

I think it is quite interesting.

Thank you, Sue! This is very, very interesting! I love it!

My Ancestry results:

My last name is Irish and yet I only show 13% Irish. However, not only my last name, but a great grandparent's name is from Ireland/Scotland. I know I have an ancestor from Sweden, though I don't know their name. I found that out from another site which pinpoints the DNA more. On ancestry I show 67% Europe West and that is a higher amount than the current residents there show. I know that most of my ancestors are from Germany and Switzerland.

I sure hope that everyone can see Sue's.

Susa, when I click on your "My results," I could not see it. I got a 403 error and the message, "You Are Not Authorized to Access This Page."

The way I shared my results here is that I went to my DNA page, then View Full Ethnicity Estimate, and in the upper right corner, there is a box to Share. From there, I copied the link and put it in here.

Where did you find out your results in more detail than on Ancestry?

Did Roy come over today?

Very cool!
What is the % of the authenticity of the test? Is it accurate? Sue do you question what they found?

I was told my whole life I was 1/4 Irish, 1/4 English, 1/4 Dutch, 1/4 German. Ummmmmmm, no. Not so! Not in DNA and not in the paper trail.

Sue: Yes, you can get all those genes in Great Britain, love your logic. The Vikings went there, and the old Celtic genes are still around there, as well.

Now I'm curious... I wonder what would show up in my DNA.
 emoticon

Probably not going to do it. But I think that I carry some mediterranean genes, because I tan easily and don't get sunburned much. Also brown hair and brown eyes point to the south. Nothing in my paper trail suggests that, though.

My mom is from Northern Germany, and my Dad is from Saxonia, so "middle" Germany. He was born in East Prussia, and his family fled early enough to avoid most of the hardship, although his father ended up as Russian PoW. (Which gave him health problems, and probably PTSD.)

Anyway, it's fascinating to see the results.

Re: My DNA Results

Queeny, Susa changed the link that she had originally, which didn't work for others to see. She put in a new link, so that is why you can see it now.

Queeny, did you also look at my results? No, I wasn't really surprised by any of my results. If you are interested, make sure you click on the regions over on the left [sign in to see URL] example, Ireland, Italy/Greece, etc. It gives more info about where that kind of DNA is found in different areas, etc.

Many people who do the DNA testing say that the ethnicity results are just for "entertainment," or "small talk." The real value of the results are the "cousin matches."

I have been in contact with two third cousins who found me from my DNA results. There are several other third cousins that I might contact. There are still others that I am still trying to figure out our connections.

In the past, several years ago, I have corresponded with a second cousin on my father's side, who I found through Ancestry, not the DNA testing, but just common ancestors in our family trees. He lives in England and I corresponded with him for a while by email. When I was growing up, our families exchanged Christmas presents with each other. I remember the books which they sent to us. I could kick myself now for not having saved them. And, he remembered that our family sent him and his sister American dollar bills and they would go to the bank and exchange them for British Sterling and then go to the toy store to buy something.

This second cousin also sent me an email with a photo that he found among his mother's things after she passed away. He thought that maybe I would know who it was, because he thought it was an American Army uniform. Indeed I did know who it [sign in to see URL] was my Dad!

Re: My DNA Results

I just got an email from Ancestry today that they have received my DNA sample. I will share the results here. I've been told that I am English, Scottish, Irish and German.

Why doesn't German have an ish on the end?

That will be exciting, Lucy! I didn't realize that you had already purchased a DNA kit.

Do you know how long your ancestors have been in the US? I hope you get a lot of "cousin matches."

Lucy, I am going to put this thread in the Genealogy forum. After you get your results and post it in this thread, I will move it back to The Sunroom, so that everyone sees it.

Susa, thanks for moving this thread to the Genealogy forum.

You must have been reading my mind!

I was going to ask you to do so, so that we would be able to easily find it later on.

Thanks! emoticon
