YooHoo, Lucy!!!!

I may have asked this before. I am not sure. Anyway, I have a pine tree in my front yard. Several years ago we had a very, very cold winter and a lot of the needles on the inside branches turned brown and fell off, so the needles are now on the outside couple feet of each branch. Does that make sense? This damage only happened on the bottom half of the tree.

I did prune a little bit of this tree, today, so that it doesn't touch the house, but I am wondering if I trim the tips of most of the branches whether the tree will start to fill in again with needles.

Here is a picture of the tree the year before it happened:

Susa, this is beyond weird! A short while ago I was scrolling through the daily thread and came across this tree. I started a new thread to ask you to post a close up of the needles. You did that here yesterday!!!

Anyway, you can cut the tips of the branches and in the spring they should put on new growth, branching a little and making the tree look thicker. I don't think it will put new needles on in the center though.

A good way to test that is to figure it is OK to remove the bottom most branches so instead cut them back and see how they look in the spring. Then if they do not grow enough new needles, remove the bottom branches. That will make the tree look better.

Thank you so much, Lucy! I will do all that you recommend.

Do you know what kind of pine tree it is? For some reason I have always thought of it as a blue spruce, but I don't really know.

I am pretty sure it is a blue spruce but maybe not a Colorado blue spruce. It looks a little leggy to be a Colorado.

Experiment on those bottom branches that look dead on the interior. If they don't bush out in a year or two cut them off.

Philece! (I love that name. Your mom and dad did a good job on that.) I pruned my tree! It is all done. I am so glad. It looks so much better now. I would have taken a picture but the sun is wrong. I'll try to get on later.

I have been thinking about Brice Sprucetine. emoticon I just don't know if I could remember it. I think I have settled on Pinelope Brice Sprucetine. After all, she should have a full name.
