Equifax issue

I just got a letter in the mail from Equifax. Actually, the letter was to my mother. She is part of the data breach.

What should I be doing about this? I don't even know who to contact. She has been dead 4 1/2 years and so she, personally, can't be harmed, but I hate to see a thief use her information to steal money.

I am sure my mother was on Equifax because she once refused to pay a $5 bill and it gave her bad credit. It was shortly after that, that I moved her in with me. I thought she owed the money and she was determined that she didn't and she forbid paying it and so it went all over those Equifax like companies.

I did not get a letter for me.

Re: Equifax issue

There are many many articles on the internet about what you should do, who to contact, etc.

As I understand it, just about everyone who has ever had any credit (mortgage, car loan, credit cards, etc) will have a credit score on the three main credit reporting companies, Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

I have also heard that something like 50% of the people on the Equifax credit reports will have had some of their data compromised.

And, some people have said that on the Equifax website where you can put in your data and see if your data has been compromised is actually bogus.

I don't know if all of these things are true or not.

What are we doing...
Through one of our banks, we already had Identity Alert protection where they will notify us of any fraud that is related to our bank accounts, credit cards, social security number, etc. Through our bank, you can enter in all of your credit cards, etc, not just credit cards through that bank, and they will notify us if there is any suspicious activity on any of our accounts, credit cards, social security numbers, etc.

We are monitoring our bank statements, credit card statements, etc very carefully. (We always do that anyway, though.)

I sure hope all of that is enough.

Hhhhh . . . I should check into that with my bank for myself. Is there a charge for that?

Of course, I have been thinking about my mother all day. It is probably 13 or 14 years ago that she refused to pay that $5. It was on a credit card, which she cut up and threw away, so I have no idea what card it ever was. I just remember how mad she was. Theoretically, that card could still be active and it could have accrued a lot of interest. She did call to have the card canceled, but if she didn't pay it off, they may not have actually canceled it. The look back time for things in Ohio is 5 years. Her estate was closed after her income tax was finished in 2014, so I don't think I will look into anything of hers until after April 15th 2019 because I don't want to be pressured into paying off a huge fee. If we go past that look back period, I should be OK. To my knowledge she was never sent an updated credit card, like active accounts would receive.

We are not paying any fee for that. It is a special free benefit because we have a fairly large amount of money with that bank in several different kinds of accounts.

I don't know whether we could also sign up with our bank through their regular types of accounts, but pay a fee for that service.

Perhaps, you could call your bank and find out about it, though.

I really don't think you need to worry about that $5 charge for your mother. Surely, if the bank was still worried about it, they would have been sending bills.

I would think they would still be sending bills, too. It was probably all over with with them when they sent it to collections. That was before she moved in with me. I had forgotten all about it until now. One time, when we had looked at her credit record, I saw it on her record. After that, a senior place here got hacked and her information was stolen. It was recommended I put a lock on her credit reports, so I did that and then, duh, I could not see her credit report! I called them and they said I could not unlock it, that she had to do it and she was unable to function enough to do that, so I never tried to see her credit report again. I figured she had no credit cards and wouldn't be getting a lone, so I forgot about it.

It is not because she had a "delinquent" account that she is in the Equifax data base.

Practically everyone who has ever had any credit at all (mortgage, car loan, credit card, etc) will be in the Equifax data base.

I had read that the people who got hacked this time with Equifax were people who had checked their account in the recent past. That sure would not be my mother.

*hugs* I'm sorry this letter has stirred up all those old fears.

From what I read, you could go to the Equifax website and enter details - but by doing so you waive any rights you have as consumer. So everyone advised against that.

You probably have nothing to worry about.

Yes, I would try to let the part about your mother go, too.

However, that is not really the main issue.

The main issue is whether the data of Susa herself was compromised. From what I have read the data of something like 143 million Americans was compromised. (That seems like a very large number compared to the population of the United States.)

Also, from what I have read, the site where you can enter your data to see if you were compromised is actually a sham. I have also read that the part where you waive any of your rights has been retracted.

I have read a lot about this (and lots of comments) on another site, that I frequently go to.

You might not feel like wading through all of the pages, but you might find something useful here.

(I have personally met many of these people when we have gone on car meets.)

Here is another site that was recommended by someone on the site that I mentioned above.

[url][sign in to see URL]

Of course, I cannot personally vouch for all of the info on either site.

(By the way, I don't think that the fact that your mother got a letter and that you did not, means that your data was not compromised. I do not think that Equifax has notified all 143 million (or whatever the number is) people whose data was compromised. So, practically everyone who has ever had a credit card, taken out a mortgage, car loan, etc, needs to be vigilant because they will have a credit record on Equifax which is one of the main three credit reporting agencies.)

Hubby said that Equifax has given everyone ONE FREE checkup. You can check your credit once for free through them.
After that it will cost something.
The banks were all saying..."put a credit freeze on your cards."...and hubby said "MOST banks charge a $10 fee to put a freeze on your [sign in to see URL] another $10 to take it off."
He [sign in to see URL] you have ever had to get credit, either on a card, or buying a house or car then you are probably endanger. [sign in to see URL] some unscrupulous person uses your credit, you are [sign in to see URL] the odds of those using someone who has very little money, but good [sign in to see URL] actually going to be very small.
WE are planning on watching our bank card and credit cards closely. We do ours all on [sign in to see URL] we can watch our charges closely.
AS for your mothers credit and your credit being [sign in to see URL]'d just watch your account closely. You are probably more at risk by using your card on Amazon or any other place, than by the Equifax breech...

Thank you, Queeny. I think you are right. I just need to keep an eye on my credit card. I never use a debit card.

Re: Equifax issue

National Jewish Health has a free "ID Watchdog" account for all employees +one family member. What it protects is the credit bureaus.
Check all 3 credit reports. You get 1 free credit report yearly.
Equifax: 1-800-685-1111
Experian: 1-888-397-3742
Transunion: 1-800-916-8800

They suggest that you put a freeze on all 3 credit report agencies. If anyone wants to look at your credit they need to ask you first. It may be a pain but surely a lot safer I would think.
I had the bank watch our accounts with a $[sign in to see URL] monthly fee for probably 4-5 years? They just now discontinued this service. ID Watchdog watches this too.
It is nice to have this for free. They allow my husband to be on the plan too for free since I am with NJH. I think it is $13./month if you do it on your own.

Mary, I put a freeze on my mother's credit reports once, because the place where she had gone for therapy had gotten hacked and she was on the list. Anyway, after I did the freeze, we could not see her reports. It was a real annoyance. I called them and they said that was right, we could not see them either because they were frozen. I think it was for 5 years. She died before they were unfrozen. I suppose if we had gone to a lot of work we could have gotten them unfrozen, but everyone only wanted to hear from my mother and she had dementia.
