5 HTP

I queried this with the supplier.
and this was their response.
......................

It is recommended to take a break from 5-HTP after three months in order to assess whether it is still relevant. If you feel at this point that you will want to continue, a shorter break of around a week should be sufficient. However, it is a good idea to continue taking short breaks to reassess every three to six months.
.................

wondering what anyone else thinks.

I was taking it for 2 months, and decided I had to survive without tablets.
I think my mood drops worsened, so now waiting a further supply

is it o.k. to just keep on taking it and not have a short break? especially as I think I do need it.

apologies if I have asked this before, but I am a worry wart..

Re:

I have taken this continually since the year 2000. Any break I have taken, my depression has returned. My psychiatrist at the time told me to continue taking it for forever. You have to understand, I had severe depression, but it sounds to me as though it is fine to continue taking it.

I have read before, that it stops working over time, but that has not been the case with me. Any break at all and I am back to depression.

Pauline, sometimes it is good to be a worry wort. You are asking pertinent questions.

I did have to increase my dose over the initial dose, but that is because of my own depressive situation.

Your questions are most important. My friend that I talked to on phone yesterday has suffered depression since we were in early high school. She has taken many different kinds of [sign in to see URL] that is one of them. I know, in the beginning she would be on them, then off, then back [sign in to see URL] ALWAYS knew when she was off, it was that obvious. AND she would [sign in to see URL] hates the times when she has to be off. But at least the last 10 years, she has never been off them. And she has had such a better quality of life. She has been able to enjoy her grand-kids, and her own self so much more.

I hope you feel better very soon, Nanny. It may take a bit for the 5-htp to work again, if you have been off of them very long.

Nanny, sometimes we have to weigh the quality of life, against the quantity of life. AND sometimes that means we have to be dependent on pills, or something. I mean, I would not take pain pills if our insurance paid for chiropractor visits, or acupuncture or even medical [sign in to see URL] are all so much safer for my body than the [sign in to see URL] I don't move with out, let alone take care of my house, husband, cats and Mom and Dad.... emoticon
