Computer screen goes black and won't come back up

I finally gave in and installed that AMD SMBus Update for Win7 that Microsoft kept pushing at me. It failed all the time in July and August. It went through this time, and that is bad news.

I blame it for a nasty problem:

My screen goes black during start-up, and doesn't come back up when I move the mouse. I can get it back by turning the monitor off and back on - but only for a second or so.

If I manage to pull up something that the computer recognizes as activity within that second, the screen stays on. So far, system settings have worked... but it usually takes a few minutes of playing that game until the screen stays up.

What I have done so far:

I looked at the most recent Windows updates to undo the bad one, and it isn't listed. Used CCleaner to look for it, and couldn't find it.

I checked the registry and used the Device Manager to update my graphics card driver. Didn't fix it. Win7 tells me it's up to date.

I changed the energy savings settings to never turn off the monitor, and that ensures the screen doesn't go black again, once I have it up and working. One step in the right direction.

I checked the cable on the monitor, although I don't believe it's a cable problem. It's tightly screwed in. Still need to check it on the computer end (which is difficult due to where it sits).

This morning, I downloaded the latest driver for my graphics card and installed it manually.

I hope that'll take care of it. If not, the next step is to get into the BIOS and check the screen saving settings there.

Wish me luck.

That sounds terrible! I sure hope you can get a fix! I would have to take my computer to a computer repair place.

I have read before not to get AMD SMBus Updates, but my updates happen automatically and what I get is what I get. However, it seems that months ago, I hid that update when I was reading about it. I just looked at my updates and I don't have it.

Installing the driver didn't fix the problem. It took several tries, but I got my screen to stay on.

Next step is checking the BIOS settings. They have energy saving settings in there, as well, and I really believe it's a wrong setting somewhere.

The monitor is fine once it stays on. No problems at all except right after booting. It happens even before I type my password. BIOS would be a good explanation... I'll probably check that when I turn on my computer again tomorrow morning.

Re: Computer screen goes black and won't come back up

Went into the BIOS this morning - before Win7 is even booting. These are settings of the motherboard, basically, that are independent of any Operating System.

The black screen happened even there, which means it's definitely a BIOS setting. Great fun trying to understand what I was seeing (they changed the whole interface since I was there last), and what I should be doing when the screen went black one second after toggling the monitor off and back on. Toogle, look, black, toggle, look, move mouse, black, toggle, look, click - and repeat... until finally the screen stays on.

Got the screen to stabilize and choose "normal" energy savings settings. Not sure this did it, however, since I may have forgotten to save my changes. I couldn't find any more detailed energy settings, which is annoying.

May have to do the same old thing again this afternoon. We'll see.

Yah, settings were saved. Problem still persists.

More googling suggests checking all the cables, including ones that are inside the computer. *sigh* That is difficult. I may wait until the weekend to do that.

Alternatively, I may have to get a new monitor. The one I have is old.

Doesn't sound like a hardware problem to me, being that consistent.
If it is, I'm not sure new monitor helps, I would rather bet on graphics card.

But that it happens even in BIOS, that I can't figure out... emoticon
It's been fortunately long since I've had to mess with BIOS on any of my computers, don't quite remember all the things there can be. But my guess would be to keep going though all BIOS settings that can anyhow possibly be related to graphics.

Then again, I only know so much. I twist my monitor cord to get colors right in my monitor emoticon
(It tends to lose blue to some degree, making screen yellow.)
And I sometimes need to poke harddrive cable to computer find it...
(To be fair, this hardware was salvaged from junkpile.)

Re: Computer screen goes black and won't come back up

Tomorrow, I want to ask our IT guy if he can spare a monitor cable. I'm sure they have lots of them lying around... I hope I can get a really long one.

The problem is that my computer sits in a little nook next to my large, oak desk, and I can't even pull it out the entire way without unplugging something. I did check a cable that felt like the monitor cable (couldn't see it), and it was a little loose and I put the screw back in. I may have to pull my computer all the way out... *sigh*

The BIOS is annoying because it has no way of actually checking monitor settings or energy savings settings. ASUS sent me email telling me how I can totally reset it. (It involves taking out the systems battery and playing with jumpers. emoticon emoticon emoticon Not going to tackle that soon.)

So yeah. Right now, it takes about five to ten minutes to get it to the point where the monitor is stable.... not fun, but doable.

Re: Computer screen goes black and won't come back up

When the screen wouldn't stabilize this morning, I did a cable test.

Even using a VGA cable (old fashioned and not connecting to the graphics card) didn't prevent the problem from occurring.

So it was rather clear it was the monitor. I talked to a colleague at work, and she told me they had discarded a bunch of monitors and she'd get one of those for me. It's a heavy flatscreen one, rather old and rather tiny.

I lugged it home, plugged it in, and it works. Which gives me time to decide what kind of monitor I want for the future.

Big relief.

It is a real relief to know what is wrong. At least you can use the discarded screen until you find the screen you want. It is too bad they weren't throwing out a nice big flat screen.

Glad you got it working enough to use, till you can get a new monitor.
At least just monitors are not that expensive.

I'm actually looking on Amazon... they are doing Black Friday sales here in Germany, as well (which is silly!!). Nothing yet... but I have seen some nice ones for ~ 100 Euro as a regular price.

Stephan is coming over tomorrow, and might bring one, as well.
